Yembol – “Don’t chew, just swallow”

Yembol – “Don’t chew, just swallow”

The fact that Yelp has a category for “African” food but not for most individual countries or regions is telling. Ethiopian food has established a toehold in Dallas with some excellent choices. Nigerian food, not so much. DT chose Yembol for Nigerian food. To cut […]

Kirin Court for Dim Sum

Kirin Court for Dim Sum

Is Dim Sum an ethnic food category?  I don’t know, but these Chinese small plates, ubiquitous in Hong Kong, certainly are worth a category of its own.  Kirin Court’s are quite good, although be prepared that some people won’t like the texture of pork ribs.  […]

Havana Café – Cuban

Havana Café – Cuban

Located in Casa Linda, and without a lot of competition in the Cuban food world, Havana Café is pretty good.   Good enough for our crew to give it an 8.5.

The pork special was tasty, and the black beans excellent.   SH’s Cuban sandwich was “better than the one at Latin Deli”, but he hasn’t eaten at Jimmy’s.   RH’s paella was the lone disappointment, as it often is.  Order Paella when lots of others do and if it is a specialty.  Otherwise, don’t.  Her fault.  DT raved about his shrimp “non-enchiladas”.  Pollo con Arroz is the national dish, beans and

None descript place, with some Cuban art on the walls and Cuban owner.   Not many people eating, so it didn’t have the feel of being part of the Cuban community (if there is such a thing in DFW).  I understand the Farmers Market may have a Cuban food stand worth trying on weekends, and Yelp seems to like the horribly named C Senor.  Cuban sandwiches can also be called a “mixto” and evidently adding lettuce or tomatoes is an unworthy Americanization.  I agree.

As to Cuban food in general, Pollo con Arroz is the national dish, beans and rice the staple and it has lots of influences.

Korean Food – before you go, read this

This article about Korean food (Banchan in particular) is beautifully written, informative and will allow you to share insightful information with your friends.  A really good read!

Moroccan – Souk

Yelp lists five Moroccan food restaurants in DFW. We went to Souk in Trinity Groves, which violates several of our rules (too trendy, not in an area where Moroccans live or other Moroccan restaurants are located, no Moroccan language spoken or native signs posted), but […]

Medina (Richardson) – Moroccan

So, I tried Medina in Richardson (right off 75 on Main in one of my favorite dining areas) after eating at Souk and it was a great little spot.  The specialty is  a dish similar (but much better than) Halal Guys, which is meat over rice with a sauce and vegetables.  I can’t recall if Halal Guys had the vegetables to chose from because it simply wasn’t a memorable dining experience, but I can tell you that these made the dish – especially the pickles.  Next time I might double up on the pickles.

This is legit – foreign language spoken by guests, a very nice owner who personally asked about everything,  and lots of nearby competition.    Worth the visit.

FYI, Medina is the old Arab or non-European part of a North African town.  It also is the second most important city in Islam (meaning ‘City of the Prophet”).
